Last night, I got to catch Nick Offerman performing for the Moontower Comedy and Oddity Fest. Offerman performed his show American Ham show for us, and it was a f*cking great time. He's not so much a comedian in the same vein as Aziz Ansari or Seth Meyers (who were also fucking awesome), but it was like listening to a hilarious and badass college professor tell you how to succeed at life. His set started as he strolled out shirtless and then donned a stars and stripes cowboys shirt. He combined original songs and personal anecdotes... and at times just seemed to let his mind wander. Oh, and Nick Offerman IS Ron Fucking Swanson...
I can't find my favorite song from the evening ("The Rainbow Song"), but here's a fun one did at the end of the night.
Yes, Offerman's wife, Megan Mullally, was there and showcased a really fantastic voice. Mullally opened the show and was backed by a three piece band. It was a wonderful surprise to everyone. I just about geeked-out when they covered The White Stripes' "Little Room." To the absolute delight of any and all Parks and Rec fans, they closed the show with 500 Candles in the Wind, the moving song for Pawnee's L'il Sebastian.
Purity Ring made an announcement last night that almost caused me to abandon all plans and rush out of the bar to get the full scoop. Shrines will finally see the light of day on 7/24/12. When I first heard 'Lofticries' back in 2011, I became an instant fan. The new song they posted is no different.
It is just about impossible to talk about how great a movie this is without giving away anything. Truthfully, to talk about it to someone who hasn't seen it just feels wrong. Even naming characters or saying who they are or what they do feels like I'm robbing you of the experience of finding out. The best way to walk into this movie is to have no idea what to expect and just let everything unfold. Because the tone quickly establishes that you won't get what anyone's doing, so just sit back and relax a spell. Watching how everything plays out is one of the most fun and satisfying movie-watching experiences I've ever had. It's not a movie for everyone. It really isn't. But golly, just watch it. Because you'll either love it and think is brilliant... or you'll think it was alright... or somewhere in between...
So how can I talk about a movie without talking about it? By using my ridiculous, moderately-handsome face. I give you the first-ever Motorcycle Sidecar Drama Movie Review... in Pictures.
Also of note... and this is fucking awesome... Jack White will be playing a steaming show on youtube the day that the album is released (4/27/2012), and it's directed by Gary Oldman.
Let that sink in...
Gary Fucking Oldman.
Yeah, Commissioner Gordan is directing a streaming concert for Jack White. Sirius Black is directing Jack White. From the article...
"En route to Mr. White’s home base in Nashville, Mr. Oldman said in a telephone interview that Mr. White selected him after being told he could choose any director “within reason.”...Mr. Oldman, a long time fan of Mr. White’s music, happily accepted. Of Mr. White’s former duo the White Stripes, Mr. Oldman said they were 'the band that you were amazed to find out was just drums and guitar – it was two of them and it sounded like six of them.'"
I stole the picture, too. So rather than more light plagiarism, check out the article from the New York Times.
Alright kids, we're a little late on this, but today and today only, Jack White's debut album, Blunderbuss, is streaming on itunes. With the exception of one EW review (by someone who appears to have sand in her vagina), the album is getting rave reviews. I have only heard the first two singles, so I will be chomping at the bit to hear the rest.
So if being just Marilyn Manson wasn't weird enough, at Wednesday night's Golden Gods Awards hosted by Revolver magazine, he had Johnny Depp join him onstage for "Sweet Dreams" & my personal karaoke favorite "The Beautiful People". Depp looked like a true rock star, head down & focused on his guitar playing. Manson looked like a true freak show as usual, face painted & screaming.
Electra Heart is now available to preview in 30 seconds teasers (really it's a tease to hear only this much). I've got my bets placed that she takes off this year, so be a doll and buy the album on April 30! Listen to "Lies" & "Prima Donna" in full below.
Lil Wayne made the announcement that he's planning on releasing an album comprised of love songs that he wrote while he was in prison in 2010. For the clever ones, DEVOL (pronounced "devil") is LOVED spelled backwards. Weezy stated it's not a typical love album though as the songs are not 'I love you' songs.
Flo performed a flawless unplugged set for the MTV show. A few days ago we posted the video of her and Josh Homme performing iconic duo Johnny & June's "Jackson". Now you can stream the entire session at MTV. You can also buy the session on iTunes and all those other places.
She's going back to her hip-hop roots boy and girls and that combined with some dance beats will make it a hit for sure. Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins (Brandy, Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, I want to keep going I love this guy) is one of few notable producers on Nelly Furtado's fifth studio album The Spirit Indestructible which drops June 19th. Here are some pics of the sky-high 'I'm Like A Bird' singer on the set of the video for 'Big Hoops'.
Could this (see below) be the lineup for Lollapalooza 2012? It looks pretty official, and a lot of the artists match up to the rumors and all the ads in Chicago that featured lyrics from the artists performing. The official lineup comes out Wednesday and will hopefully be a lot prettier.
I may not be a fan of the name change, and I still don't understand why it was fully necessary but I still like the band formally known as The Morning Benders. Here are two new tracks they've released under the new name POP ETC. They still sound like them but a little more upbeat. POP indeed.
As I've documented before, I f*cking love Childish Gambino/Donald Glover. So, when tickets went on sale for Gambino's show, I bought them the second they went on sale. That was in November. On April 5, 2012, I got to see him live. At last. (A short review after the break)
Sooooo... I don't really have much to say about this movie. I liked it. I had fun. I'll prolly buy it on DVD... prolly won't splurge for the special edition Blu-Ray. It was entertaining. At no point was I totally lost and lamented that I had never read the book. The problem I'm having is that I just don't have enough thoughts nor do I feel strong enough about this move that I have a lot to say. And fuck, at this point, has anyone not seen it? So instead of the usual review, here are a series of thoughts. (More after the break)
And in other OVOXO news, it was announced that a collaboration between The Weeknd & Wiz Khalifa is coming soon. The penciled in title for the track is "Make Me Remember You". YOLO.
Totally missed anything printed about Timbaland even being in Austin during SXSW. Regardless, he performed and played clips of two new songs that'll be on Missy's upcoming album, tentatively titled Block Party due out this summer.
"Triple Threat"
And apparently here, you can skip to 6:55 to listen to "School Bell Ring" (I don't hear it but I'll let you be the judge).
Here's a clip of Florence + The Machine and Queen of the Stone Age's Josh Homme covering Johnny and June's "Jackson". The clip is from the upcoming session of MTV's Unplugged which will air this Sunday (4/8) at 10 PM on MTV and Unplugged.MTV.com.You can purchase the session the day after. One person particular that was front and center at the show was Mr. Kanye West who was supposedly dancing and singing along. Cool kids all around.
Scissor Sisters announced that their next album Magic Hour will hit the web and store shelves 5/28 (in the UK, US release TBA). They haven't released many details about the album but if the first single "Shady Love" is any preview, it's going to be great. The next single "Only The Horses" (out 5/20) was produced by Calvin Harris who a man that turns everything he touches into a foot stompin' dance tune.
