During Animal Collective's radio show, it was announced that next Sunday their new album Centipede Hz (9/4) will be broadcasted live. We've already heard "Today's Supernatural", track two of the record, which is a bit messier than the music that makes up Merriweather Post Pavilion. One thing we can always count on Animal Collective and its counterparts on being, is weird.

Late night television yesterday was fun. Grimes made her debut performing "Genesis" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and she looked more darling than ever. Grizzly Bear got silly with Stephen Colbert at StePhest Colbchella 012 and performed "Yet Again" from the upcoming Shields (9/18). After that ran, we saw the awkward (to say the least) interview between Jon Stewart and Robert Pattinson. The "Twilight" star is currently making the rounds to promote "Cosmopolis" but the public cheating scandal is the only thing anyone cares about. Pattinson is definitely pulling off the "sad puppy" look very well.

It seems like the only thing buzzing and humming yesterday was the new season of Arrested Development. Lots of new pictures from the set came out giving us all a look into what awesomeness is to come. The season is set to be released all at once early next year (2013) via Netflix. It's quite incredible what the show was able to get away with in the first place. Let's all put on our jean shorts and celebrate.

We struggled with ourselves for some time about whether we wanted a "Call Me Maybe" parody touching our blog...but this one is Batman, and we're all about Batman. To make up for the sad reminder of that awful piece of music, watch "Bane After Batman", the best thing that we've ever seen Chris Kattan do.

Grumpy, Mitt Romney-supporting Clint Eastwood is in a new movie, Trouble With The Curve starring Justin Timberlake, Amy Adams, and John Goodman. It's a heartwarming story about a baseball scout (Eastwood) who begins to lose his sight and lose his job to the younger guy. On the side, his daughter (Adams) feels like it's her duty to care for him even though he abandoned her as a child. Timberlake is his usual charming self as the aspiring baseball player and Adams' love interest. Can't say we are too excited about one.

In Playing for Keeps, Gerard Butler plays an ex-soccer player who gone's little league and takes as many opportunities to be shirtless and/or pants-less as 90 minutes allows. It's some sort of love triangle, romantic comedy story blah blah blah. The only reason I'll see it will be for the fact that it was filmed mostly in my hometown of Shreveport, LA, and I want to point and laugh at all the places in that godawful town. The movie hits theaters December 7.

If you were unable to see Shut Up and Play the Hits, the LCD Soundsystem documentary, the film got an official DVD release date of October 9.
The xx put out another beautiful new song. "Chained" is soothing and danceable which is exactly what they wanted us to feel and do. It has some beats in it that are different from the typical song we're used to hearing from the group. The lyrics are super powerful, and I like the direction the band is going. I can't wait for a remix of this one. "Chained" comes after the band released the first single "Angels" from their upcoming album Coexist.

About a year ago, No Doubt tweeted a picture of them in the studio with Major Lazer. Thinking about the two of them working together was fun since the two genres of music are pretty different. Yesterday we finally learned what they were doing together so long ago. Released was a remix of No Doubt's first single "Settle Down" from their first album in over ten years. I wasn't really into the song in the first place, and I'm not into the weird reggae-dubstep remix either. I love the two bands but this one's a thumb's down.

A couple days ago, M.I.A. tweeted (the official release for everything) a strange-looking track list for, what's believed to be, her new album. Then on Twitter, M.I.A. took some questions from fans about the upcoming new music. After explaining that the number of tracks on the new album will be determined by the number of songs that sound good in a car, there will be no collaborations or producers involved that are fame whores, and that the new album "is a fuck you to them [industry people] and a thank you to you [fans]", she stated a book, LP, documentary, and art exhibition are all coming in December.

This has been a great year in films (you too music!) and another movie sneak peak just hit the web. I knew when I started watching the trailer for This Is 40 that the cast looked familiar. The comedy is sort of a sequel to Knocked Up that surrounds the pain and struggles of the marriage between Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann's characters. Directed and written by Judd Apatow, it's sure to be one more entertaining and hilarious film by the man. And take a look at the cast...seriously awesome.

In the "Outta My System" video, one of the singles from MMJ's Circuital, one-eyed Jim James and crew go up against Zack Galifianakis The Wizard in a colorful, psychedelic space mission (see the opening sequence of Smiley Face). The pedal steel guitar in this song makes the video all the more outrageous and hilariously absurd. The video was directed by James Frost who is responsible for Radiohead's 3D technologic "House of Cards". Outta My System Remix EP is due out 8/7 with remixes by Washed Out and Dave Sitek.

Spin Magazine gots what we need. Diamond Rings' John O'Regen talks about his upcoming album Free Dimensional (10/23) and fulfilling our lives with his music. The first single "I'm Just Me" is fierce but has a dark quality to it and keyboard synths that would make the 80s gods proud. The lyrics focus on one of O'Regen's leading subjects, gender identity.

When it wasn't raining, Toro Y Moi debuted a funky, synths-all-around new song at Lollapalooza over the weekend (via Stereogum).

I think this may be his prize. How I Met Your Mother star Josh Radnor is making his indie movie debut in Liberal Arts, a story about a mid-30s liberal arts graduate who is stuck in a rut. Not a new story but hopefully a different take on the one major in college that we all look back and ask "why'd we choose this again?" I'm not totally sold on Elizabeth Oslen's acting yet but with the rest of the cast including Richard Jenkins and Allison Janney, I can look past it and reevaluate later.

Not even two years later, Oscar winners Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) have put together a movie chronicling the Navy's thrilling capture and eventual killing of Osama bin Laden during Obama's third year as president. Zero Dark Thirty already has quite a bit of controversy surrounding it. First, they had to get rid of the original script that was written prior to the capture/killing. Then there were accusations that Obama gave the writing team access to top secret information surrounding the capture to use for the film. Also, ZDT was set to be released in September but the studio was accused of using it as publicity for Obama's campaign, so it was moved to December.
Mars is like WOAH. In continuing Ellie Goulding news, here's a Halcyon album trailer previewing some of the songs off the new album. T-minus 65 days until it drops (Oct 9). Meanwhile in Gaga land, she revealed a new tattoo, POPART and later on wanted to make sure we all didn't make any assumptions about her new album or project...whatever that means.

For a while now, there have been rumors of Drake doing some posthumous work with Aaliyah. I mean the guy is a pretty big fan considering the large tattoo on his back of the late singer and several lyrics mentioning her. Being fans of both artists, the song that was released yesterday is baller. "Enough Said" is a smooth and mellow jam with Aaliyah's sumptuous vocals throughout with a middle verse from the always superb, lady-swooning Drake.

Nobody Walks just came out with an official trailer, and it's a doozy. It's a twist on the modern story of a homewrecker and the cast is incredible. Set to star in the film are John Krasinski (The Office), Rosemarie DeWitt (Mad Men United States of Tara), Olivia Thirlby (Juno), Dylan McDermott (The Practice, American Horror Story), and India Ennenga (Treme). I'm scared to see my beloved Jim play a cheater but I always love when he's in something outside of The Office. The movie was a winner at Sundance this year, and I'm excited for the release date (10/12).

Two nights ago via The Colbert Report, the man himself announced StePhest Colbchella '012: RocktAugustFest, his wacky version of a mega-concert. The lineup includes the Flaming Lips, Grizzly Bear, Santigold, Grandmaster Flash, and fun. It takes place August 10th aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in NY, missiles and all. The festivities will air throughout that week.

I'm too lazy to explain what the Fragrant World scavenger hunt Yeasayer put together for fans yesterday was all about, so just be glad you can stream the whole album now without any of the hard work. Another new album that I and the rest of the world are or should be excited about is Major Lazer's Free The Universe, which he announced is gracing us 11/6. Ezra Koenig, Wyclef, Bruno Mars, Tyga, Wynter Gordon & of course, Amber Coffman for "Get Free" are joining Major Lazer on the record.

In the world of the reels, Prometheus 2 is officially a go! Jack and I had our disagreements about the movie but I think the second will be even better since it's been set up by the first. Unfortunately, one of our favorite writers, Damon Lindelof has not signed onto the project yet. Season 8 writing of HIMYM is underway but it may be the last. Writers are currently trying to figure out whether it will be the last season, so they can know whether to finish the story and answer the biggest question, who is their mother? Regardless, they promise us full coverage of Barney & Robin's story and more hilarity from the whole gang. For now, Larry David is putting Curb on hold and staring and producing in an HBO movie directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland).

In the perfect world, Paul Qui would cook at every restaurant, and our stomachs would always leave happy. I'm not a gamer but the track-list for NBA 2k13 is enough to make me one. It's the kind of music you hear at a sporting event, and it just pumps you the funk up. Jay-Z executively produced the soundtrack which will obviously feature some of his own stuff. Artists in the latest installment of the basketball video game include Daft Punk, Coldplay, Kanye West, Santigold, & lots more. In cinema news, the first trailer for Skyfall was released with exactly the footage you'd expect to see in a Bond film (not always a bad thing). The first image from Ridley Scott's The Counselor came out with Brad Pitt looking all handsomely cowboyish. Earlier this week, an extended trailer for Cloud Atlas was released. If you were like us, you were A) floored that you sat through an almost six minute movie trailer B) loved that M83's "Outro" was used accordingly but C) confuzzled (confused+ puzzled). It looked like Crash mets a Terrence Malick film mets The Fifth Element and every other genre of film that exists. Watch this short video of the directors and writers (same three people minus the author of the book) explain what they had in mind.

I'm trying out a new segment tentatively called YESTERDAY IS HISTORY. I'm not too fond of that title but this was a spur of the moment decision, so other title suggestions are welcome!
Anyway, yesterday was a bit slow but there's always something going on. Animal Collective released their first single, "Today's Supernatural" from their upcoming album Centipede Hz (9/4). They told us that this next album would be nothing like the superb Merriweather, and that they'd be going back to their roots for this one. I don't know a lot about early AC but I like the anger in this new song & look forward to the rest. You can also stream their live Sunday night radio mixes on their website. On Sunday's first live radio show, Panda Bear debuted two new instrumentals of his, "Principle Real" & "Soft Serve Rip Curl".
Ellie Goulding announced some very exciting news. Her next album, Halcyon drops Oct 9. The video for the first single "Anything Could Happen" hits the web August 13. Earlier this month, Ellie covered Active Child's "Hanging On" and beautifully so. This, I gather is the direction she's going with the new album-dark and broken. I do hope she gives credit to Active Child (not just contractually speaking) but some big love.

As of this post, I've seen THE DARK KNIGHT RISES 4 times (opening day, twice on Sunday the 22nd, once on Monday the 23rd). The first was at the IMAX. If you were there and saw people having entirely too much fun with stickers, that was our group. The last three have been at two different Drafthouses. Lauren has seen it three times. We are big fans of this movie.

I walked into the first screening a blank slate. I refused to read reviews or spoilers or watch any clips. I just wanted to be surprised. Contrast that with the Avengers, I was reading everything and watching and rewatching every clip. Granted the Avengers plot is more simplistic, so it's not like there were any spoilers. You knew that Earth was gonna be invaded, you knew that the heroes would rally, and you knew they'd win. The fun was the execution and not so much the plot. I read the reviews because I wanted to see the praise for Joss Whedon's masterful work. With Nolan, you knew it would be masterful, and the fun was both the plot and execution.

The Dark Knight Rises completes Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy. It is, without a doubt, the greatest comic book/superhero trilogy of all time. TDKR takes place 8 years after the events of the The Dark Knight and borrows story elements from classic Batman stories: The Dark Knight Returns, Nightfall, and a dash of No Man's Land. We see an older Batman return to action, get his ass kicked, and then kick ass.

Not sure if this is gonna be a review or just random thoughts... We'll see how this goes. What I liked...
- It brought the story back to Bruce Wayne/Batman. As brilliant as The Dark Knight was, it was the Joker's story. That seems to be the problem with superhero movies: the villains overshadow the hero in terms of either character or screentime. It's wonderful that the series ended where it started. Bruce Wayne.
- Bane. Like many, I didn't see how Bane would fit into Nolan's more-realistic universe. But Hardy is captivating and easily proves to be Batman's equal. Not better than the Joker, of course, but Hardy was a lot of fun to watch.
- This movie was full of characters, but I thought Nolan did a fantastic job of balancing and giving them all arcs. I enjoyed every single performance. Every single one. (Well, maybe not the CIA guy at the beginning. He seemed to be over-doing it.) Everyone brought their A-game. Hell, Michael Caine was barely in it, but he gave the most moving performance. Hathaway and Hardy and Bane and Cotillard were also wonderful.
- Kinda spoilery... I felt as though the end was perfect. I'd read comments that it was a little too tidy, but I didn't mind. He's Batman. He's ALWAYS supposed to have a plan. This was his last master-stroke. The story ended but didn't. It would be easy to make a sequel to this. The series could die with a happily ever after but can just as easily be resurrected if Nolan wanted to tell more stories.
- The Dark Knight was the more thought provoking of the trilogy. It was the one that stayed with you and haunted you. I think TDKR one was the most purely entertaining. Seriously, in four times I've seen it, no pee breaks, and the story has kept me drawn in.

What I Didn't Like
- Close your mouth, Batman... He does entirely too much mouth breathing as Batman. When Selina says, "You've given them everything," and Batman goes, "Not everything. Not yet." It bothers me so much that his mouth is open the entire time. It's such an epic line.
- After 4 showings, I still don't love Bane's voice. I understood everything he said, it was just meh to me... I appreciate that Hardy wanted to do something different, but it just doesn't always fit. It doesn't sound like it's coming from him. It kept reminding me of Seth McFarlane's voice-role in Hellboy 2 as Johann Krauss. It was also pretty inconsistent. Sometimes it's heavily prevalent, and he sounds like a higher-pitched Borat or a German/Russian guy, other times he sounds like... a regular guy with a mask. It was kind of compelling to listen to, but I feel like that mostly good writing and not necessarily the vocal performance.
- The biggest complaint I've heard (and agree with) is the pacing of the 2nd act. 5 Months went very quickly, and that was hard to buy. The city should have been burning or wasteland-ish. I read one criticism about how it seemed like the city still ran itself and did fine... garbage was picked up... And at first I thought that that was dumb, but it's actually a pretty good point. This city gets occupied, and bam... nothing really... unless you're a cop.
- Spoiler... When Miranda Tate is revealed to be Talia Al Ghul, it's a fun reveal... but it really relegates Bane to being just hired muscle and not the intelligent man pulling the strings. They kinda stated that at the beginning though... called him just a mercenary. I felt like that robbed some of Bane's shine. And there should have been more for Talia.

Other thoughts
- There was a lot of similarities to Rocky 3. Keep in mind, I LOVE Rocky 3. You have the older hero who's set up to fight the young, hungry, intimdating guy. You have the old, white guy telling the hero that he can't win and leaving for most of the rest of the movie. You have the hero getting his ass kicked. Then the hero has to go back and train... (Granted, there was no Apollo Creed-like character), and then the hero wins the rematch. Just a thought...
- Who wouldn't have loved it if Talia lived and was pregnant? Would have been an "Ooooooooooh" moment cor comic book nerds...
- I've had "Deshi Basura" stuck in my head since the first screening.
- I was positive that Nolan would pull an Inception in us. I was positive that Batman would appear to die in the final scene. And as the city mourned Batman, we'd see a Batman... thus making the great debate afterwards: Was that Bruce Wayne? I'm so much happier with the real ending.
- What happened in Colorado is a tragedy. More, I can't stop thinking that it's just such a dick move. I mean, if anyone did that at any showing, it'd be a tragedy... but the midnight show? Those are the hardcore people that prolly had to plan crazy ahead and knew that they would be feel those three hours the next day. Those aren't the casual fans. Those are people that were committed. Those are the people that care.

The Dark Knight Rises is the best film of the summer and the perfect way to end the summer. Again, Joss Whedon is my master, but I don't mind having contributed entirely too much money to help the Dark Knight rise... although it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. Go see this movie. At least twice.

Crystal Castles is back with a new single "Plague", and I must say that it makes my head spin (in a good way). It's got a doomsday feel to it like it should've been played during one the scenes in TDKR. Alice's voice sounds so ethereal and lovely. I've always been a general fan of the band but if this is the direction they're going I'll probably listen more intensely. You can download the song now for free.

This is the first MAN OF STEEL trailer. I've heard that it isn't currently playing before the Dark Knight Rises. (No trailers played during my IMAX viewing.) There isn't much to see, but it hints that something HUGE is coming. There are two trailers that show the same thing, but one is with Jonathan "Pa" Kent's (Kevin Costner) speech and the other is (Superman's biological father) Jor-El 's (Russell Crowe) speech.

THE OFFICIAL (TERRIBLE) SONG OF THE 30TH OLYMPIADI like Muse. Well, I liked Muse. I still like their first four albums. I still like MANY of their songs. But their last album was filled with entirely too much meaningless, soulless bombast and overproduction. I like a little of that sometimes, sure, but it was all just... too much. Too many songs with too many different stages to be enjoyable.

And they haven't really looked back from this approach. This is the official song of the Olympics. It is ridiculous. It's painfully ridiculous. I mean, the main part is okay. That part is simplistic and anthem-ic. And Matt Bellamy doesn't sing too much. Everything else is just... Yikes.
You won’t pull ahead

I’ll keep up the pace

And i’ll reveal my strength

To the whole human race

Yes i am prepared

So, randomly, I had this weird craving to watch a bunch of Alfred Hitchcock movies. I have not seen ANY Hitchcock movie. I haven't even seen the crappy Hitchcock movie remakes. I'd just heard, all my life, that he was a master filmmaker, and I wanted to finally watch his movies. Fuck, if I review and critique films, I should have some knowledge of classics, right? (This is somewhat similar to last year when, all of a sudden, I wanted to watch a bunch of Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns.) I'm on classic-movie binge lately. I finally watched and loved Casablanca. And it made Hot Shots: Part Deux that much better for me. I also realized that the reason those spoofs work is because they riff and reference classic movies. Modern, shitty spoofs (All the _____ Movies) riff already-shitty movies... but I digress.)
Jack somewhat live blogs his reactions to class Hitchock movies after the break...

THE BIRDS (1963)
- The Birds was the last movie in the collection, and the only reason I started with it was because I wanted to be a smartass and eat fried chicken while I watched.
- The movie starts with what's almost a weird romantic comedy premise. All it needed was some mid 90s soft rock, and it's adorable.
- The leads are pretty and have great chemistry. Came to find that the lead chick, Tippi Hedren, is Melanie Griffith's mother. Also, Jessica Tandy is in this. Coooool.
- 40 minutes in, and very little fucking happens. Everyone is mysterious, but nothing happens. A bird sighting here and there. I start to wonder if I'm watching the right movie.
- When the bird attacks happen, they are pretty awesome scenes, but I'm very unhappy with people's reactions. Everyone is covering up, but nobody is screaming. If I were swarmed by birds, I would be screaming, "Oh my God, these birds are fucking killing me. Help." The only scene that I have an issue with the filming is when the kids are attacked. It looks really high school-production-y. I bet George Lucas would have re-released this with some big ass, CGI birds that look slightly more real but clearly aren't.
- There is no music at all. It gives weight and suspense to the sounds of the birds chirping. I wonder if that was the only reason for the stylistic choice.
- Does no one own a shotgun in this town? I've shot, like, four guns in my life, and even I know where the guns in my house are. You spray some buckshot at the crowd of birds, you'll be fine.
- When they're attacking the lead chick, she isn't screaming for help. Not even trying to open the door to get away from them. Apparently, her fight or flight response has been replaced by the "stand there and fucking taking it" response.
- It's like a zombie movie except instead of the living dead, you have pissed off birds. I will give Hitchcock this: he made some good, tense moments (not gonna say scary) with a bunch of birds. I'd like to think that he took this as a challenge... like... how can I make this non-scary animal somewhat scary?
- Overall... meh. I'm prolly not gonna pop this one in again. It was a tough premise to accept, but the characters' reactions to the birds took me out of this movie... And also... I mean, c'mon... they're birds.
- Porn version title suggestion: The Birds and The Bees... In Vaginas

REAR WINDOW (1954)
- I remember that I first heard of Rear Window when Christopher Reeve starred in the 1998 TV remake after he had his horse jumping accident. Never saw it. What did I watch in 8th grade?... Ah yes, Kevin Sorbo's Kull the Conqueror. I was in 8th grade, what?
- Okay, so the general premise is that this dude in a wheelchair witnesses a murder across the street... (I think.)
- Starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly... Cooooooool.
- This movie has music. Really buoyant, bubbly music.
- Good opening scene. No exposition. Just panning through a sleeping guy's things to give a good understanding of him.
- There is a very, bouncy blonde making a sandwich wearing only pink underwear. I'm trying to forget that she's either really dead or really old now.
- Very good visual storytelling. I've noticed that we alternate between reaction shots of just him and shots of what the character is looking at. Never shots of him looking at stuff.
- "We've become a race of peeping toms. What people ought to do is get outside their own house and look in for a change." NICE.
- I'm really digging how this is filmed. Paced well. And the voyeuristic quality is natural and not forced.
- Jimmy Stewart is an amazing actor... but I'm having a hard time believing these two are together. He seems like a crotchety, old man (the wheelchair isn't helping). His vocal patterns are so natural, but his voice just sounds old. She seems like a young princess.
- Okay, so we had a yell/yelp (done masterfully and understated), and we're suspecting the husband of a sickly woman as a murder... The only gripe I have is that the suspect is acting comically suspiciously... Looking out the window to see if anyone is looking and leaving the windows wide open. Also, he looks like a really fat Egon Spangler.
-Temporary distraction #1. Whoa, Ray Allen joined the Heat. I knew I hated that guy.
-Temporary distraction #2 as I looked through an AOL slideshow of teachers that had sex with their students... I seriously don't get some of those.
- Temporary distraction #3. So, I bought Live From New York. which, like, an oral history of SNL by cast, crew, and hosts. Really fun read, and I keep picking it up to read about random stuff like the Sinead O'Connor debacle and Norm MacDonald getting fired... 40 minutes left. Gonna power through this movie and go the fuck to sleep.
- There are times when this movie's sound is amazing. Ambient noise mixed with neighbors playing instruments. Other times, the music kills the suspense.
- Okay, holy shit. This is a good movie. I'm gonna stop with this "review" there. Watch this movie. This is great stuff.
- Porn version title suggestion: Rear Window for Rear Entry

Vertigo (1958)
- Alright, night 2 of my Hitchcock film fest. Tonight we're watching Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novac in Vertigo.
- Right off the bat, this is a bit trippy. Almost like a James Bondian intro.
- So, when the movie is good, I'm not really updating. No quips. No observations. Just immersed. Some of the dialogue is clunky and boring, but it's good... and there might possibly a ghost possessing someone.
- It really is amazing how good Jimmy Stewart is. This doesn't seem like it's a role written for someone his age, but he makes it his. But he's so... real. His delivery is so naturalistic.
- Okay, so Jimmy is falling for Kim's character (who is both married and nutso) because she's gorgeous and all mysterious... and possibly possessed by her great grandmother. This is a stretch for me. I'm reminded of the Hot/Crazy line from How I Met Your Mother. She's clearly under the Vicky Mendoza diagonal.
- Alright, homegirl just threw herself off a building. Homeboy tried to save her, but his fear of heights stopped him from acting quickly enough... There's a little less than half the movie left...
- I... uh... Can't say mind was blown, but my mind is awfully confused... It's... there's... I... The plot just took a turn for the awkwardly absurd. So, the crazy chick was hired to act crazy because she looked like this dude's wife. The dude was trying and able to convince Jimmy Stewart's acrophobic character that she killed herself. And since he is acrophobic, he didn't see how she switched places with the murdered wife... This is not a smartly-written story.
- And now Jimmy Stewart has reunited with the chick he fell for, but she looks a lot different, so he stalks her to win her affections (which she already has for him), and now he's trying to get her to dress like the dead wife... This is really not good anymore. He's clearly unstable now. I really don't get where this is going. He's bullying this chick to being another chick, and she's going with it... and it's all so very awkward.
- "If I let you change me, will that do it? If I do what you tell me, will you love me?" I know that she was the chick that he originally fell in love with, although she was playing a crazy wife... but what the fuck? How big a step back was this for womanhood? This is so creepy.
- Trying to think... is there a word for wanting to have sex with a person because they look like someone dead that you wanted to have sex with when they were alive? Ugh, I'm so creeped out by this now. The characters are all so... icky. This is all so implausible.
- Like, I mean... if I saw a girl who looks like the last girl I dated, and I was like, "Hey, you kinda look like this girl I dated, and I'm only interested in dating you because you look like her. NOTHING ELSE. Nothing about you other than the fact that you look like her appeals to me. Would you have dinner with me? Please. I'm really old and lonely and afraid of heights, and I can't stop looking at you... Oh, but lemme change everything about your head. There... Yes... NO! NO! TRUST ME, THIS LOOKS BETTER ON YOU. I DON'T CARE IF YOU HATE IT!" Lordy, how low is this chick's self esteem?
- Okay, so now he figures it out... and he lets her know he figures it out in a big long, expository speech. Earlier, she had written him a letter in her head with a big long expository speech. If you have two speeches that say what the plot is, it's a bad plot. It's like a Shyamalan movie.
- Aaaaaand she falls to her death....
- AND THAT'S HOW THE MOVIE ENDS?!?!?! What the in blue fuck was this movie? I think I dislike this movie as much as The Birds.
- From the IMDB FAQ- "Why do people say you need to see "Vertigo" two or three times before you get it?
Vertigo is a great film, but not a perfect one. First-time viewers tend to focus on the plot, its implausibilities and a twist that seems to end the movie half-way through. Second- or third-time viewers can concentrate on the characters; the themes of love, obsession, unrequited love, duplicity and manipulation; and the extraordinary depth and beauty that the performances, images and music give to them. Vertigo has a hypnotic power on the viewer who has already solved the mystery of the plot and can now delve into the mysteries of human nature." So, I'll "get it" if I don't concentrate on the plot so much? The fuck?

North by Northwest (1959)
- Alright, we're back with this one. My knowledge of this movie comes from the Family Guy episode after they took that two year hiatus... (when they were cancelled.) I already recognize the music.
- This might be the first time I've ever watched a Cary Grant film. The lead chick, Eva Marie Saint was Martha Kent in Superman Returns.
- Wow, we are six minutes in, and things are already getting intense. Cary Grant's character is being taken into custody by two douchey-looking, mysterious guys.
-Of the movies I've watched, the name of this one doesn't really give much away about the plot.
- We meet the black-suited "Mr. Townsend." He oozes "villain." So, it seems like the plot is a case of mistaken identity.
- I've noticed that music is rarely a big part of Hitchcock's movies... He doesn't rely on music as a crutch to increase tension. It's all on the actors. This is a good thing and a bad thing.
- And so the chase begins!
- And so the chase ends... I'm lost, but it's in that good way... Everyone is mind-fucking him.
- Okay, so, again, the entire plot is revealed very early on (seemingly), but this movie is more about the chase of this dude. Only one truly ridiculous sequence involving a murder. If the muppets ever murdered someone, that would be how.
- So, he's an ad man on Madison Avenue. Mad Men. Coooool.
- We now meet Eva Marie Saint's character... who's coming on really strong... and I'm assuming is a secret agent.
- Jeez, was every ad man on Madison Avenue getting some from everyone back then? Me and my creativity were born in the wrong era.
- I wonder why Tom Cruise never re-made this film. It's basically right in his wheelhouse. Dude on the run. Guys chasing him. Forced romance with a woman...
- Alright, the chick is working for... the bad guy. I was wrong.
- I really suck with watching movies nowadays. Especially when holding a computer. I've stopped paying attention... Granted, the scene is literally a dude watching cars pass by... for like 4 minutes...
- Just got to the famous Airplane scene!
- Okay, there are much better ways at trying to kill someone than trying to run them down... in an airplane. I'm from the videogame generation, and even I know that this would be the level that would piss me the f off.
- There are some terrific bits in this. It's really funny at times. There's a scene where the Cary Grant character has to find a way to escape a room in which an auction is taking place, but there are bad guys waiting for him outside this room... so he fucks with an auction to get escorted out by the police. It's funny.
- And it turns out I was right about the chick. She was working for the good guys. Double twist! But it works.
- The climactic battle... Alright, I got tired in a hurry. You can't watch these kinda movies when you're tired. The growing suspense drags. To be honest, I watched the last 20 minutes on semi-fast forward.
- Happily ever after... but, what actually happens to these characters. Homeboy had a life and a family and a career...
- Overall, this is pretty good movie. Rear Window is still my favorite, but this isn't bad. So, as it stands, I like 2 Hitchock classics, and I dislike 2. It all comes down to... PSYCHO
- Porn version title suggestion: F*ck by F*ckfest... Well, that's just uninspired.

PSYCO (1960)
- Psycho is at a disadvantage. I know the twist. I know that the chick dies early on. I know the shower scene...
- This is the first Hitchcock movie I've seen in black and white. This is the first one featuring actors and actresses I don't know, either. I'm assuming the lead blonde chick is Janet Leigh.
- I wonder if this is gonna make me wanna watch the remake. So far, no.
- Janet Leigh looks both really old and really young.
- I think that this is gonna be one of those movies I like more when I do my traditional, post-film research.
- Alright, Janet's on the run because she stole her boss's money.
- So, while Janet is driving, we hear dialogue. I can't tell if it's actual dialogue or voices in her head.
- First distraction... trying to think of the website dedicated to my niece in the NICU.
- 26 minutes in, and we're at the infamous Bates Motel.
- We get a glimpse of Mother's silhouette... I really hate that I know the twist. Then Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates come out. He's the psycho, but he seems very normal. In my head, he was creepy. That's how modern movies wsould play him... Obviously creepy or overly nice. He just seems normal. Good.
- We hear the voice of Mother Bates. Didn't see that coming.
- Okay, he's talking about taxidermy and stuffing birds... It's a very childlike performance.
- "A boy's best friend is his mother." Here we go...
- "A son is a poor substitute for a lover." HAHAHAHAHA... Uh oh...
- Okay, Anthony Perkins is scary good. Intense passivity... Scary good. "We all go a little mad sometimes." He's totally overpowering her in this scene. It's scenes like this that makes me REALLY miss acting.
- 46 minutes in, and we're at the infamous shower scene!... I kinda feel like Mr. Skin...
- Ooh, this i good. This is really creepy. And there's the origin of the murderous 're re re re re' song. THAT WAS AWESOME.
- We're staying with this body and the shower sounds for a long time.
- "Mother! Oh God, mother! Blood! Blood!"
- Just checked wikipedia, and this movie was released on 6/12/1960. Today is 6/12/2012.
- Okay, the whole cleaning thing is running kind of long.
- The scene with the private detective and Norman Bates... Another great scene. It's sad how you don't get these great dialogue-y moments too often anymore.
- And mother kills again. Re-re-re-re-re-re!
- Just found out about Norman Bates' mother murder suicide. Even knowing, it's delivered well enough to be pretty creepy.
- So, the sister and the boyfriend are investigating. The sister is trying to speak with "mother," while the boyfriend keeps Norman busy.
- Here comes the reveal... baaaaaah! Awesome.
- A bit anti-climactic, though. No big confrontation. Good reveal of his psychotic-ness... psychosis... Whatever...
- Ooooh, so Norman murdered his mother and her lover.
- I can't tell whether I love or hate this Scooby-Doo reveal... where one dude tells the evil scheme and intention. Too much exposition...
- Alright, now I can't tell if Norman-mother or Norman-Norman killed the people. Great creepy smile at the end.
- No credits.
- Okay... I rather enjoyed Psycho. Knowing the twist didn't distract from the great performances and the overall cleaverness. 3-2 for Yay on my Hitchcock essentials experiment.
